Announcing SIP Calling with Keypad for Softphones and VOIP Desk Phones

When we launched our new cloud phone system, Keypad, we received many requests from small business owners and operators who wanted to use Keypad with their existing VOIP desk phones and SIP softphones. (If you're never heard of SIP, it's a protocol — "session initiation protocol" to be exact — that enables you to turn an internet-connected device like a computer into a receiver for phone calls.)

Now, Keypad works with SIP, so you can make and receive calls using a VOIP desk phone, your computer (via a SIP softphone app), or both. This feature is available for $5 per SIP-enabled number.

Keep in mind that SIP is only for phone calls. For text messaging, voicemails, contact management, faxes, call recording, and other features of Keypad, you will still need to access the Keypad app through a web browser at

Read on for directions to set up SIP calling with Keypad.

How to set up Keypad SIP calling for a softphone

Before you begin, please note that there will be an immediate charge to your Keypad account of $5 for each SIP phone you add.

  1. Go to your Keypad Office Directory at

  2. Click on the down arrow next to "Add destination number" and select "Add SIP phone."

  3. Choose a nickname and username (this is required for SIP authentication later), and the Keypad number that will display as your Caller ID.

  4. You will be asked to confirm payment of $5 for this new SIP phone. After you accept the charge, you will see details of your SIP phone, like this (the password has been hidden):

Note: You cannot change your SIP domain or password. Click "Save" to return to your Office Directory, where you will now see that your SIP phone has been added.

Repeat steps 1 through 4 to add more SIP phones as needed.

  5. Download your preferred SIP softphone, like X-Lite (free) or Bria (a paid version with more features).

  6. Open the softphone app, and enter your username (this may appear as "user ID"), domain, and password exactly as they appear in the Keypad Office Directory. Save your account credentials.

  7. You can now make and receive calls on your computer using your SIP softphone! Don't forget to add your new SIP phone to your call routing configuration.
